It’s the Most Wonderful Time

to Foster

It’s time for Operation Silent Night, which means lots of pets getting adopted to loving homes just in time for the holidays (awww).

But what about the pets who don’t get adopted or aren’t ready for adoption yet?

They go to foster homes!!!

Foster care is such a vital part of animal rescue these days, especially at times like Operation Silent Night (OSN). By having fosters “on deck” and ready to take any pets who aren’t adopted by the conclusion of OSN, we assure that every pet gets to spend the holidays in a loving, comfortable home.

While the goal of OSN is to get every pet in our shelter into an adoptive home, there are some pets who may not be adopted in time and there are others who will not be available for adoption during the event. Pets undergoing medical treatment, waiting for visits with specialist vets, or pets who are too young for spay/neuter surgery are examples of those who would not be available for adoption during OSN. All of these pets will need to be placed in foster homes.

Invite a foster pet to be your special holiday dinner guest.

We’re hoping that all of our available pets go to loving, adoptive homes. We can’t predict how many will be adopted and how many won’t, so we are unsure of how many fosters will be needed. Having a list of available “on deck” fosters is vital for this reason. Hopefully we won’t need to call anyone on the list because all of our RAL pets were adopted 🤞. No matter the outcome, we will need all pets to be out of the shelter by December 21st. Any who go into foster care need to stay in their foster homes until January 9th.*

Due to the amount of people visiting during OSN and limited staff availability, we will not be able to accommodate dog-to-dog meet and greets for fosters, so any OSN fosters should be prepared to separate pets and do a slow introduction in the home (we will provide guidance for this process).

Please read over our foster handbook to see if fostering is the right fit for your household. If you are interested in fostering during OSN you can sign up here. If you’d like to join our foster team for more than OSN, please visit our foster page for more information.

* If this timeframe does not work for you but you really want to foster for RAL, please don’t be discouraged. Sign up for our regular foster program to take in a foster pet at another time.
