Job Description: Volunteer Coordinator
Classification: Hourly – Non-Exempt
Starting Salary: $36,000 -$39,000 Annually
Reports to: Human Resources Department
Summary/Objective: The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for recruiting, training, and developing a dedicated and growing community of volunteers, all of whom play a crucial role in achieving the mission of Richmond Animal League. Volunteers are essential to the operation of RAL, helping to expand our capacity to care for animals in various ways. Their contributions focus on but are not limited to, Animal care and adoptions, clinic support, organizational outreach and awareness, administrative support, events, and fundraising.
Through the efforts of the Volunteer Coordinator, we ensure that our volunteers are meaningfully engaged, supported, and empowered to make a difference in the lives of the animals and the community we serve.
Essential Functions:
Work with staff members across the organization to develop and promote a wide variety of volunteer opportunities that will meaningfully engage volunteers in mission-related work as part of the larger team.
Design and implement recruiting strategies to engage volunteers from diverse backgrounds.
Review and respond to volunteer applications, welcome interested volunteers through orientation into the organization, and assign volunteers based on volunteer interests, strengths, and organizational needs.
Problem-solve and address volunteer questions, concerns, complaints, and/or support additional training needs. Work with the supervisor to lead corrective actions if issues arise.
Monitor volunteer attendance and availability, maintain handbooks, and ensure compliance with all RAL policies.
Maintain updated records of all volunteers to include hours logged, training completed, and work performed.
Work collaboratively with the supervisor to plan and execute volunteer appreciation efforts and events throughout the year.
Facilitate ongoing communication of relevant information to volunteers via phone, email, social media, and other forms of communication including weekly Volunteer Update email.
All other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibility: This position has no direct staff supervisory responsibilities but does support the entire volunteer force.
Work Environment: The shelter and clinic are high-noise areas and the Volunteer Coordinator will be exposed to cleaning chemicals, fumes, dust, and animal urine and feces. Potential for exposure to animal bites and scratches. This job may include frequent lifting, extensive walking,bending, and standing. Work takes place both inside and outside.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: This is a Full-Time position. Evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand. Regular and reliable attendance is an essential function of this position.
Required Education and Experience:
Associate’s degree or equivalent
Strong communication skills
Previous supervisory managing a group of people
Ability to effectively work with diverse groups of individuals
Technologically proficient
Preferred Education and Experience:
Volunteer Management Experience
Bachelor’s Degree
Experience in a fast-paced environment.
